This award may be delivered to a Year 12 or Year 13 student. It can be used as a progression route from the Gold Award, but also can be used as a stand-alone award for students who wish to demonstrate a range of skills to support university entrance or potential employment. Students are expected to work independently, designing their own challenges in a range of unfamiliar situations and working with unfamiliar people. Students are able to draw on existing curriculum opportunities to extend their study, develop a skill or interest, explore career opportunities or design a ‘free option’ choice. Students will need some contact time for negotiation of targets but the expectation is that they will be able to complete this Award quite independently and use some personal time.
If students enter the Scheme at this level, they will need to complete 4 points to achieve the Platinum Award. They will need to complete the required number of challenges and show evidence of action planning (1 point is given for action planning, recording achievement, reviewing essential skills and a presentation giving detail about their achievements).
Students who have successfully completed the Gold Award are allowed to carry 1 point through as recognition of prior learning. For the Platinum Award, students must complete the required number of challenges but also must ensure that they cover the requirements for the essential skills at Level 3.
Students design their own challenge and choose the length and depth by deciding whether the challenge will be worth ½ a point or one point.
It is possible for students to gather evidence to satisfy the NZQA criteria for the Essential Skills of SM, Work and PS, and obtain credit inclusion within the NCEA framework at Level 3.
ASDAN Awards also provide opportunities for students to achieve Unit Standards and demonstrate appropriate levels of expertise in the Key Competencies.
Students may choose challenges from the following modules:
Following internal moderation, centres are required to register candidates for external verification two calendar weeks before a regional meeting. Regional meetings are held in Terms 2,3 and 4. Certificates are issued by ASDAN on successful completion of an Award.
The skills and evidence produced in the Platinum Award are worth 20 credit equivalents at Level 3 and can be used towards NCEA if needed. Completion of the Platinum Award may support an application to further/higher education or potential employment opportunities.
The Platinum Award is a full year's course.
